FDR Fools Fest, 3/3/2010 Yorktown NY
On Friday I traveled down to Trumbull CT and stayed with the Dunnes for the weekend. The weather was beautiful for early April with temps between 65 and 75 all weekend and lots of sun. This was a disc golf weekend to die for. It being Easter weekend I was happy to get away from the celebratory side of the holiday and just be outside. No church, no dinner, no prayers of the faithful, just the sweet flight of the disc and the sound of chains.
After arriving at Bill's around 10am we headed over the hours drive to FDR park in Yorktown NY. The park is not officially open yet but day use is allowed. We had plans for a practice round. The first thing I noticed as we pulled in was the amazing number of damaged trees, there were branches everywhere. The storms of the spring really seemed to have created a mess at this park and I wondered whether a round was going to be possible. Luckily the hard work of the tournament crew headed by Bill Newman already had cleaned up the course. Fairways were relatively clear, branches pulled to the sides and piled. The tees and baskets were in fine shape with several very new tees on the early holes.
We played the course with a serious approach, practice how you play. I was hoping to improve on the 2 rounds of 62 I shot here back in 2007. That weekend I tied Scott Selders for the lead and lost a closest to the pin to finish second in my Advanced Masters division. During practice it was obvious the course is a bit harder, they took out a couple holes and replaced them with two real beauties. Hole 5 a straight tunnel in the trees towards the lake with lots of elevation change was the hardest. Then there was a quick birdie try coming back up the hill on six. Still this is a tough course and I was struggling in the practice round. The back nine in particular gave me trouble, I was off on my release point and hitting the wrong throwing lanes making my upshots difficult. At the end I was at 67 and thinking this was going to be a tough weekend. Bill playing in AM 1 this weekend shot a practice 61.
Dinner at Coyote was good and Saturday could not come soon enough for me. There were 13 Am Masters registered and after the practice round I was hoping instead of beating my old scores to more just come in somewhere in the top half of the pack. I thought hard about my being in the moment during play. Zen golf is the way to go and when we arrived and warmed up I felt good about the day. Feeling good about the day is easy when it is so warm and sunny. In the first round I started on hole 17 and things did not start too well for me. I threw my drive to the trees on the right and chipped out missing a very long third shot by a bit but making the come backer for 4. Not the was to start and certainly it could have started me down a negative road. Mentally though I bucked up and stayed focused and then parred 18,and 1&2 before taking a four on the tough 3rd hole. Then I pulled off a doubly good 3-3 on the next two really tough holes and I was on my way to a very good round. I still had trouble with the back half but when all was said and done I shot a solid 60 and had a 3 throw lead over several guys.
Round two started much worse, the throws just a bit off, and starting on hole 12 the back half of the course again got the better of me. I very quickly saw my lead fall away and Jeff W. who was throwing par golf charged ahead. John H., Craig A. and the ageless one Rick Williams had their difficulties through the round really leaving Jeff and then me to fight it out for the win. When we got to the 5th hole Jeff who by this time was ahead by a couple strokes ran into his own issues, trees. So coming out into the field had just a one stroke lead which he gave up after a great drive muffing his putting. So onto hole 10, and 11 the last two, with both Jeff and I tied. My drive was a bit up the hill to the left but with enough room and long enough that I had a shot to get a three Jeff played the hole well and was had a long three chance before nailing the easy four. My second shot was great and I had a 30 foot putt that I made to nail the three. So one hole to go and I now had a one throw lead.
I had the tee and delivered an acceptable drive on the short hole 11. I was about 35 feet again from the basket. Jeff threw a beautiful drive to withing ten feet. So some pressure to make a putt again. This time though it caught chain and fell out, and Jeff cleaned up his two and we were tied at the end of regular play.
Another playoff, hole one my drive was off to the right into the stream about forty feet from the basket. Jeff threw another great shot sticking to the bank closest to the basket for about a 25 foot try. I floated my putt up and then off the lip of the basket. Jeff with the sure hand plowed home his putt for the win.
So to recap, twice I have played at FDR and twice I have lost a playoff on hole one. geeez! Still my continuing quest to stay within myself in control and zen about my golf was working well. I was never really upset and felt I played well with a 60 -62-122 and second in the event.
That night we went out to Charlie Moore's for chicken wings and all was good. Bill played great taking 5th in AM1 and young Billy, tore the course up and won the Pro Open division.
