Wednesday League @Devens

Trying to build on the idea of zen disc golf I drove to Devens on this misty evening hoping to play a shot at a time. John Borelli was back from his honeymoon cruising in the warmth to run the league. I ended up in a group of five with John Daniel Marcus, Dan and Pete Tolvanen. It was a good group in that everyone played at a decent clip. It always makes my game flow better when there is not a lot of waiting. Again I was thinking about the concept of only focusing on the shot at hand, but that is not all there is to this game. There is do you play aggressively or conservatively, when should you be more aggressive or hold back. This being practice I am more inclined to try some shots, but I have to say my derives were on enough that I was not in the position often of having to make up ground. Certainly on the first hole I had to consider the topic. My drive was low and rolled down the hill a bit, looking up at the 40 feet or so to the basket, with trees on both sides I could have tried to torque one right at the basket but instead just floated one to stick about 5 feet away. When it comes to Devens, the front half can be a killer so if you can manage it you can set yourself up for a good score. I did just that playing the front half at even. Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows there are many a day when 5-8 over is the story of the front half of this course. So good for me on this day. I was particularly happy with hole 7. I really struggle with this hole. Teeing from an old concrete slab you have to either pull a backhand around a big corner to the right or throw a forehand there. The first twenty feet of this has just enough trees to make it interesting. If you make the corner there is an elevation drop and a large boulder on the right blocking view of the basket, trees on the left with enough room to play through but far left more of a drop to the fairway of hole eight. I copied what I had seen the previous league and limited my movement on the tee, just pulling a Roc around the corner leaving me just 30 or so feet from the basket. Where it is a slow where the hole sits I laid up for the three but damn it was a rare three for me on that hole.
Although I was rolling along I was not making any of the birdie tries I had. Granted they were long I should really continue the putting practice because I was very soft in my putting. I did four hole 16, stupid hole! and then also 18 to give me an excellent 56 round. Great group of guys on this night. I won my 5 dollars back so got to play for free. The zen was working well and I hope to continue it when I head down to FDR this weekend for the FDR Fools Fest.
