Sunday Morning Social @ Devens
This morning I was up early and ready to play. So out of the house and on the road by 7;15AM. Devens has the Sunday Social at 9:0 and I was planning to get in a round before that. Very little traffic on and time was good getting out there. I wanted to get some play in because the weather forecast is looking like rain fr the next few days. Today the morning was cold and sunny about 30 degrees, making the warm up really hard to do.
After last week I needing to work on my zen; I had a perfect first round for that. I was pretty bad. Whether it is just too cold to get a good grip on the disc, or some mechanical thing in my throw I was just off in the first round. After a couple threes the troubles started and just continued through the round. 4s, 5s and a six on hole seven and by the end of the front nine I was +9. Each time I made a bad throw I really was conscious of letting go and attempting to be excited about the next throw. I knew I could turn it around if I could stay in the moment. At the end of hole 15 I was still on pace to shoot 70, at +16, ouch! I kept my head though and had a very nice birdie on 17 and then had a great long drive on 18 and made a tough downhill 20 foot putt to get a 3. So 69 is the score I came away with was 69, the difference was in my head. I felt good about keeping my shit together even though I sucked. In a tournament that can be the difference between a total meltdown and getting back into the competition.
I took a 20 minute rest in my warm car while the other guys who arrived for the social warmed up. Luke, Jimmy, Troy and Pete were there for the event. We started and things were okay for me in the second round. I went +5 on the front nine but still was not great. Still the disc did not feel right coming out of my hand. My head was good though, I was into the round and not holding onto shots. Even though my putting failed me a bit was was just playing. It is really hard not to let ego play in the game, not worrying about where you stand in comparison, just making throws. I think I did okay. In the end I threw a 61, and was fine with it. I think Luke threw something better than that. In all it was a good round and great practice at not getting thrown off by tough play.
