The Vineyard Social VI - March 20th

This tournament is an adventure. On Martha's Vineyard in March can be a weather nightmare but remarkably the two years I have attended the weather has been absolutely beautiful. This year the day was warm and sunny in the mid sixties with an afternoon sea breeze just to make things interesting.
I got up at 4am to head out for Woods Hole to catch the 7am ferry to the Island. It is about an hour and 40 minutes from my house to the parking area where I caught the shuttle bus to the boat. info is here: http://www.steamshipauthority.com/ssa/ The drive was smooth with no problems being so early on a Saturday morning. I even had time to get a cup of coffee before parking.
Hooked up with Dunne and Son on the boat as the were kind enough to offer me a ride out to course since they were taking their car across. Conversation was light and cheerful with everyone thrilled that the weather is working out. The ride is only 40 minutes or so and went quickly by. Driving off the boat we picked up Mike Saimond and zipped out to the course.
Bill Dunne says the course looks like the African plains, Cape Cod and the islands are a combination or Scrub Oak, Pitch Pine The trees are small and hardy in the acidic soil, with brush growing around it mostly bearberry and sedges. He is right it looks like the Serengeti sort of... It is interesting and makes for a unique disc golf experience. I would say the branches do not have a lot of flexibility so when you hit something you no it. We started the morning playing the Red course which is half freshly cut through the brush in this forest. It is a tight course requiring very controlled and accurate shot. I played well on this course as it matches my home course of Deven, MA in its skill requirements. There were a couple times though where I just could not find an open space. Shot a 60 and went into the lunch break with a 1 shot lead over a few guys in our 11 man field. It is a shame I could not keep that lovin feeling in the second round.
But first let me say the lunch we purchased from the vendor at the tournament was excellent. I can't find the information but boy was the sandwich great.
I struggled with a couple things in the second round, instead of playing in groups within division the crew at the tourney made a rookie mistake of just doing scores so we were all playing blind. I had no idea what was happening with my other Advanced Masters and they had the same problem. I played with three Am1 guys. I shouldn't say played because I more just threw badly. I had a stretch of four holes where I went 5-4-6-4 and pretty much killed my chance at winning this tournament. Well at least that is what I thought but really I let my zen approach leave me for about eight holes and that is what did me in. I really had a chance and if I could have gotten my head together I would have saved a few strokes and won this baby. Water under the bridge and a good lesson for my next tournament April 3rd at FDR park in New York. Let go of every shot, don't continue to hold onto it after it has left your hand. No reliving what has happened. Live in the moment.
I came in second by a throw and am happy for Arty, who got the win. After playing years in am one he finally has added his considerable talent to our division and we will be better for it. Now if we could just get Bill Dunne to come back.
We were lucky on the way out to get on an earlier ferry than originally scheduled for so I even got home by 10pm.
