Dragan Discgolf Championships Auburn ME 6/5/10
Last weekend I traveled north to Auburn ME to play in the Dragan Disc Golf tournament. This is my second road trip of the year where I stayed in a hotel and went up a day early. So the Friday before the tournament I drove up and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn right in downtown. Before checking in I went to the Dragan course and played a practice round. Last year in the tournament I had my two best scores at that course, with a 53 and a 56. I really enjoy the course and looked forward to playing there. The day was overcast but warm, the course was free for the day for those playing in the tournament and I took full advantage of it. I played well in practice throwing a 55 my second best score on the course. Since this year we were playing one round at Dragan and one round on the newly installed orange course on the Beast at Enman Field I then travelled the 20 minutes and played the beast. It was a bit confusing walking around alone on that course and I did get turned around at one point. I shot a 63 but was just trying learn shots so I played a second round of 18 holes more seriously. It could have been a mistake to play more but being healthy for the first time in two years I gave it a go. I threw a 57 and felt good about both courses by the end of the afternoon. I went back to the hotel and chilled, see my entries in Ed on the Road to see my evening. The day of the tourney I woke to the hotel shaking from the thunderstorms outside. It poured for hours and I was totally bummed about the discgolf in the rain. I drove through it to the course and waited for the start time. Luckily about a half hour before the start the weather cleared to overcast but no rain. We started a group of five and I played really well, by the 9th hole I had a pretty nice lead and only had one 4 in the round shooting a personal best 51. I had an 8 throw lead heading over to Enman field and the beast. My approach to the second round was to stick with Rick Williams who was in second and at least match him on the course until the hole ran down and I could not be caught. The strategy was solid and going into the last hole I was on pace for another 57, but unfortunately I shot off a tree and out of bound so took a five on the last hole. Still I won the Advance Masters with a six throw edge.
Ed Hovestadt 51 - 59 - 110
Rick Williams 59 - 57 - 116
Tony Webb 61 - 59 - 120
Scott Connell 60 - 62 - 122
Rob Feeney 60 - 62 - 122

Second year in a row for winning this one. WooHoo!
